SNEAKER RECYCLING PROGRAM

Keep Islip Clean participates in NIKE's "Reuse-A-Shoe" program by collecting old sneakers for recycling throughout the month of January. NIKE recycles the sneakers into various materials that are then used to produce athletic surfaces for donation to underserved communities.

In the 2012 drive, well over 4,000 sneakers weighing approximately 1 ton passed through the KIC office for shipment to the NIKE Recycling Plant in Memphis, Tennessee. This unique project keeps a significant number of sneakers out of Islip Township's waste stream while also promoting physical fitness through the installation of surfaces like running tracks and basketball courts.

NIKE will accept sneakers of any brand but not any other type of footware, such as rubber soled shoes or flip-flops. Also, metal cannot be recycled in this case and must be cut out of any sneaker donated.

Strong community participation, the hard work of the KIC Junior Commissioners, and the support of National Grid, the Long Island Ducks and the Islip Recycling Department help make this program a resounding success each year.

Sneakers can be dropped off at the KIC office Monday through Friday between 9am and 4:30pm, from January 1st through January 31st.
